Microsoft is a multinational computer technology corporation. It was founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 4, 1975 by Bill Gates and Paul Allen.
Allen came up with the original name of Micro-Soft (a portmanteau of microcomputer and software), as recounted in a 1995 Fortune magazine interview with Allen and Gates. Hyphenated in its early incarnations, on November 26, 1976 the company was registered under that name with the Secretary of State of New Mexico.
Microsoft's current best-selling products are the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office suite of productivity software.
The ensuing rise of stock in the company's 1986 initial public offering (IPO) made an estimated four billionaires and 12,000 millionaires from Microsoft employees.
