Debbi began her business in 1977 in Palo Alto, California. Since then it has grown to nearly 400 locations in the U.S., and over 80 locations internationally. She introduced automation early on, and her business efficiency is the subject of a Harvard Business School case study.
Fields began franchising in 1990, and, though she sold the business to an investment group in the early 1990s, she remains as the company's spokesperson. Debbi Fields is quoted as saying: “I've never felt like I was in the cookie business. ... My job is to sell joy. My job is to sell happiness. My job is to sell an experience.”
